Hello. Well, today in my school we had character education as we do every week, this week's "word of the week" was Tolerance. Every week we have a new character trait that we are supposed to discuss and enact. SO, this week our principal went on the school news and gave us a bit of a lecture on Tolerating other people, ideas etc.. Now, I am all for tolerating other people and not putting people down because of the amount of money they have, the clothes they wear, the music they listen to etc. etc., it is completely wrong and ignorant. But think about this, if a school principal goes on the announcements during the student's only "free period" and instead of them listening to music or hanging out during that time they have to listen to their principal.. Do you think they are going to even open up to the idea!?! I don't mind so much, but realistically do you think that those kids care about what their principal has to say( and with all do respect)...Probably not. They aren't going to listen or get anything out of that speech, especially when it is cutting into their relax time.
I am all for character education. I believe that being a good person is something that should be taught in school, but teachers need to go about it the right way and really instill an idea in these students minds I also think that when you are 14 years old you should possess these qualities already and if you don't, then it is probably too late for school system to teach them to you. I see the kids at my school make fun of each other and not tolerate each other all of the time(believe me I was the target for their ignorance for years) and I really don't think that the principal telling them that that is wrong will make them stop. If you want teenagers to stop doing the awful things that they do to each other you are better of showing them a video all about Columbine. Maybe they'll think about the consequences of being ignorant before they ruin someone else's life. Listen to the song Teenagers By My Chemical Romance... It sums it all up. I would also have you consider reading they book "Give a Boy A Gun" By Todd Strasser. So I guess that today's lesson is Tolerance.
